Thinking about tinting your car windows in Ontario? Before you go ultra-dark, it’s important to know what’s legal — and what could get you pulled over or fined.

At Tint by Designs, we stay up to date with Ontario’s latest tint regulations so you don’t have to. Here’s everything Toronto drivers need to know about Ontario’s window tinting laws in 2025.

🚨 Why Ontario Regulates Tint

Window tinting offers comfort, privacy, and UV protection — but it can also impact driver visibility and law enforcement safety. That’s why Ontario has specific laws about how dark your tint can be, especially on front windows.

✅ What's Legal in Ontario (2025 Update)

According to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act and updated 2025 MTO enforcement guidelines:

Front Windshield

  • NO tint allowed on the entire windshield

  • A tinted sunstrip is allowed only on the top 75 mm (3 inches)

Front Driver & Passenger Windows

  • Must allow at least 70% light in (a maximum of 30% tint is legal)

  • This ensures clear visibility for the driver and police

Rear Windows & Back Windshield

  • No legal limit — you can tint these as dark as you like

  • But your vehicle must have side mirrors on both sides if rear window is tinted

❌ What's Illegal (And Could Get You Fined)

  • Tint darker than 30% on the front driver/passenger windows

  • Full windshield tinting (except top 3 inches)

  • Tint that’s bubbled, peeling, or damaged, impairing visibility

  • Using mirror or reflective tint

💵 What’s the Fine for Illegal Tint in Ontario?

Police officers have discretion, but you could face:

  • A fine of $110

  • A "remove tint" notice (you’ll need to peel it off to pass inspection)

  • Failing your Safety Standards Certificate during resale

🔎 Does Tint Affect My Safety Check?

Yes. As of recent updates, any tint on the front side windows that blocks more than 30% of light will cause your vehicle to fail its Ontario Safety Certificate inspection — which is required to sell or re-register a vehicle.
